From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A list of films that are based on war books. If a book has been turned into both a film and a TV series (or TV film), then the TV series is included.

In this case, the term "book" indicates some sort of pre-existing source material, published, unpublished, or work in progress. This material can be a bound book — novel, history, biography, play, stage musical, thesis — or often something shorter — short story, magazine article, poem, essay, song, and so on.

The purpose is to provide readers with sources to investigate further. In some cases, there is a strong connection between source and film; in other cases, the connection is weaker. James Bond films are "based on" the writings of Ian Fleming but in certain cases use little more than the title and the principal character. Neither does Rudyard Kipling's poem "Gunga Din" provide the full storyline required by a filmmaker.

Lesser-known conflicts generally have fewer films of any kind about them. Therefore, in the interests of providing readers with something to pursue, the actual connection between source and film may be weak.

For earlier conflicts, see the List of films based on war books — 1927–1945.

Maniacs

For a period in the early 1970s, maniacal characters in popular fiction were commonly said to be Vietnam veterans, recently returned.
It was a number of years before veterans issues were approached intelligently and sympathetically.

The passage used is as follows:
7 Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.
8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.
9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.
  97. ^ In Grozny, Arabs and Chechens cut the head off a terrified Russian soldier as black American mercenaries stand and laugh. The corpse continues to kick as the head receives a light roasting over the fire. Later, an Arab attaches the severed head to an RPG and shoots it into the Russian lines.
Baltic women snipers target the crotch of a screaming Russian soldier.
Black Americans laugh heartily as an Arab urinates on Russian corpses while performing a little dance.
A Russian male sniper gains the upper hand when he takes out the groins of the Baltic women.
The fact that a surviving Russian tank crewman has only one limb remaining makes it more difficult for the Chechens to crucify him. The blood-drooling Russian Christ survives long enough to see victory.
Many urban warfare scenes involving tanks and infantry are effective.
The Chechen commander smokes Sobranie Cocktail cigarettes.
