Vladimir Putin meeting King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand. Putin is alleged to be worth as much as US$40 billion, though he contests this and claims a personal wealth of only US$150,000. As of June of 2009, Bhumibol Adulyadej is estimated to be worth US$30 billion and is considered the wealthiest head of state in the world.

This is a list of heads of state and government by their net worth, and is listed in U.S. dollars for simple comparison purposes. Former heads of state and government may also be found, though listed separately from current ones.

There are issues with converting the net worth of various individuals from around the world to a single currency, notably ignoring the buying power and standard of living in a person's native country that could inflate or deflate a person's net worth relative to others upon this list. For example, when comparing the same standard of living and property, it would cost more to live in London or New York City than it would to live in a rural town, and such living would cost still less in a developing or poorer nation. Or more plainly spoken, the same dollar buys more in a poor country than in a prosperous one, and this list does not account for that exchange in purchasing power. So converting all net worth to American currency is done for ease of comparison only, and may not adequately represent the buying power of an individual within his native country.

It is also difficult to distinguish between the personal and Crown wealth of several ruling monarchs upon this list, particularly in countries ruled by an absolute monarch that do not have a need or practicality to separate the two. Many constitutional monarchies require a distinction between a monarch's personal finances from the monarch's state finances as a matter of law, thus several royals upon this list may have figures that underestimate their total financial standing because the wealth of their Crown is excluded. An example would be Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, whose personal wealth was estimated in 2007 to be about US$600 million, while her Crown property (That is, Crown Property in right of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) as was estimated at about US$10 billion.
