Love is a Drug is the upcoming debut
album from American actress and singer-songwriter Leighton
Meester. The album is tentatively slated for early 2010.[1]
Background information
Meester described her debut album with an "electro-pop edge"
rather than bubblegum, being edgy and danceable.[2] She has
worked with Lil Wayne,
JR
Rotem, Kara Dioguardi, Spencer Nezey of Jupiter Rising,
Polow Da Don, Harvey Mason, RedOne, Clinton Sparks and Kenna. [3] Her
influences for the album include Madonna, Britney Spears,
Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry, Gwen Stefani and Fergie. Meester
states that "they’re very strong women and have a completely unique
sound." [4]
Songs
On an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Meester gave them an
exlusive listen to three potential track to be on the yet-unnamed
album. “Push and Pull” is an elegant anthem about making a
relationship work; she says the song “takes my breath away”. On
“Almost Perfect”, she takes a break from electro-pop for a
stripped-down ballad lamenting a lover’s lies. The song ends with
Meester bluntly spitting, "F--- you". Then there’s the pulsing
“Lights Out”, produced by J.R. Rotem (Britney Spears), which has her singing
very un-CW things like, "Don’t turn the lights out/I bet you like
to watch." Meester has also stated that she recorded songs outside
the Universal Republic label. Cover
songs like Awesome New Republic's "Birthday" and "Bette Davis Eyes"
have the electropop sound she describes to be on the album but is
still unsure whether to add them.[5] About
25 songs have been completed, however, and collaborators include
producer Mike Caren on
“Somebody to
Love”, Stuart
Price on “I Feel Everything” and J.R. Rotem on “Lights
Out”. Meester also plans to showcase her vocals on more downtempo
tracks like “Your Lies Are the Truth”.[6] Another
leaked song called "Body Control" generated positive reviews from
fans as she maintains the "electro-pop edge" that keeps her current
with current musical trends.[7][8] Meester
also collaborated with Lil
Wayne on the track "Make It Rain", which he picked out
himself.[9]
