Lyari Town (Urdu: لیاری ٹاؤن ) is one of the eighteen constituent towns of the city of Karachi, in the province of Sindh, Pakistan. It is the smallest town by area in the city but also the most densely populated town. It is bordered by the towns of SITE Town to the north across the Lyari River, Jamshed and Saddar to the east, and Kiamari to the west across the main harbour of Karachi.
There are several ethnic groups in Lyari Town including Muhajirs, Punjabis, Sindhis, Kashmiris, Seraikis, Pakhtuns, Balochis, Memons, Bohras, Ismailis, etc. Over 99% of the population is Muslim. The population of Lyari Town is estimated to be over one million.
Lyari is the oldest place of Karachi, the name of the Karachi also got from an old Sindhi Baloch woman, Mai Kolachi. The term Mai means "woman" in Sindhi. It is considered as the most backward area. Few schools, no proper hospitals, poor water system, not much facilities, broken roads leed this area and made it the most dangerous place in Karachi.
Lyari is a stronghold of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). Lyari is considered one of the most dangerous places in Karachi due to ubiquitous gang activity and a thriving narcotics industry; certain areas of the town are literally controlled by gangs and municipal authorities have no power. Hence, the town has also been the site of many (mostly unsuccessful) police operations. The two biggest gang leaders in Lyari are Rehman Dakait and Arshad Pappu, who are the most-wanted criminals in Karachi. Lyari is also the centre of Karachi's African-descended Sheedi community.
Lyari is also popular as a football hotbed in Pakistan, and many of the nation's top players emerge from the area--the sport's popularity is so much in the area that crime levels dip significantly during the FIFA World Cup season.

The federal government introduced local government reforms in the year 2000, which eliminated the previous third tier of government (administrative divisions) and raised the fourth tier (districts) to become the new third tier. The effect in Karachi was the dissolution of the former Karachi Division and the merger of its five districts to form a new Karachi City-District with eighteen autonomous constituent towns including Lyari Town.
The Naib Nazim of Lyari Town is Baboo Jamaal Haider
The town of Lyari is subdivided into eleven union councils:[1]
