Mackenzie (also spelled MacKenzie, Makenzie or McKenzie), originally pronounced "makenyie" (/məˈkɛnji/) (see yogh for an explanation of this), is a surname of Highland Scottish origin (see Clan Mackenzie). It is also used as a given name—in North America it is sometimes used for girls.

Gaelic Mac (son of) + Kenzie ("the intelligent one" or possibly "the wise ruler"). Possible alternate: Gaelic MacCoinneach (Son of Kenneth).
