Magadheera (Telugu: మగధీర) is a 2009 Telugu film directed by S.S. Rajamouli and produced by Allu Aravind. Ram Charan Teja plays the lead role along with Kajal Aggarwal while actors Srihari and Dev Gill play other prominent roles. Filming started in February 2007 and because of various delays, was released theatrically worldwide on 31 July 2009 in 1200 screens. Magadheera is the highest budgeted Telugu film ever taken with a budget of INR 400,000,000.[2] With a gross collection above Rs 1.3 crores, the highest for a Telugu movie [3]. Following the film's success, the film will be dubbed into Tamil as Maaveeran, which is slated to release in January 2010.[4]

Filming

The second half of the movie in the 16th century was shot in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Rann of Kutch. A part of the film was shot in Badami in Karnataka. The first and last part of the film was filmed at the Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad.

The first song of the film "Bangaru Kodi Petta" was filmed at the Chennai Port. "Naa kosam nuvvu" song of the film was shot in Switzerland. "Panchadara Bomma" song was shot at Golkonda fort in Hyderabad.

Reception

Boxoffice

Magadheera was released world wide on 31 July 2009. The film been released in around 1500 screens in 14 countries.[5][6] and the satellite rights for 7 crores.[7]

  • The film has collected a share of Rs.20 crores in the first week in India. With overseas revenue, this figure reached 28 crores [8].
  • The film crossed all records in collections and stood as one of the biggest in South India hit. It had collected a whopping share of about 114 crores (including satellite rights).
  • It is second to Ghajini [ Images ] (also produced by Geetha Arts) which reached Rs 250 crore. The film has two more All India records to its credit -- it ran in 301 centers for 50 days at a stretch and in 223 centers for 100 days. It crossed 175 days in both Andhra and Krnataka states sand moving towards one year (365 days).
  • It is declared stupendous blockbuster by South Indian Film industry.

Allegations of copyright infringement

A writer named S.P.Chari sent a notice to the producer Allu Aravind claiming that the story of the movie was taken from his novel "Chanderi" and poet Vangapandu Prasada Rao held protests claiming that his lyrics were used without permission in the movie.[9]

The soundtrack of the film was released worldwide on 28 June 2009. It had music scored by composer, M. M. Keeravani, and a remix song from Chiranjeevi's movie Gharana Mogudu titled "Bangaru Kodipetta". Lyrics have been provided by Bhuvanachandra, Chandrabose and M. M. Keeravani.[10] The music was launched on the night of 28 June 2009 at Shilpakalavedika by Ram Charan's father, film actor Chiranjeevi.[11]
