HH The Emir Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum (1943 – 4 January 2006) (Arabic: مكتوم بن راشد آل مكتوم; Maktūm bin Rāshid al-Maktūm), also referred to as Sheikh Maktoum (honourific) was the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the emir or ruler of Dubai.

Born in Al Shindagha, Dubai to the Al Maktoum family of the Al Bu Falasah tribe, he first became Prime Minister on 9 December 1971 and served until 25 April 1979 when he was replaced by his father, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. Following the latter's death on 7 October 1990 he resumed his position as Prime Minister and also took over as Ruler of Dubai. He served in both positions until his death on 4 January 2006.
Sheikh Maktoum also briefly served as acting President of the United Arab Emirates on 2–3 November 2004 following the death of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan until Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was proclaimed and installed as President of the United Arab Emirates on 4 November 2004.
Sheikh Maktoum ran the emirate of Dubai along with his two brothers, Sheikh Mohammed (Crown Prince and Minister of Defense) and Sheikh Hamdan (Minister of Finance) of the United Arab Emirates. Internationally, he was also known as co-owner (with his brothers) of Dubai's Godolphin Stables, which competes in major horse races around the world.
Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum died on the morning of 4 January 2006, suffering a heart attack while lodged at Palazzo Versace Hotel located on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. He was succeeded by his brother, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum as ruler of Dubai.
The Al Maktoum family are originated in Abu Dhabi but many moved to other countries in the gulf such as Saudia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain. Mohammed Rashid Al Makotoum Owns 40%share holder of the emirati oil industry while the family of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi wowns 60% the Al Maktoum and Al Nayhan royal familys own 30% each and spend the rest among their family tree decedents, each family has more than 10,000 decedents making the average of 0.05% share holding of UAE oil industry Average Salary 100,000 Dirham A Year (£200,000).
Although the family share the belongings among descendant family members their shareholding remaining is worth 9 billion Dinars (£18.4 billion). Spreading the share holding among family is a sign of respect and honor.
