Subversion is a version control software that allows users to download the very latest version of a branch without having to wait for someone to get around to packaging it. Advantages to using Subversion include the latest version, vastly simplified updating, the ability to roll back an upgrade, the ability to create and submit patches. See http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Subversion for more information.

If you use SVN, upgrading is comparatively easy. Simple SVN up to the latest revision of the code you wish to use, and run update.php. (You are supposed to backup your files, but it is just as easy to revert using SVN)

For those not using SVN, you can download a zipped package. Simply unzip it and replace your files with the contents.
