From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Hinduism, Mandodari (Sanskrit: मंदोदरी) was the beautiful and pious daughter of the King of Danavas, Mayasura and the celestial dancer, Apsara Hema. She is best known as the Queen Consort of Ravana, the son of Rishi Vishrava and the demonic King of Lanka.

She was the mother of Indrajit, who earned the name after defeating Indra, the King of the Devas.

Pancha Kanyas

She is one of the Pancha Kanyas in Hindu mythology, the others being Ahalya, Draupadi, Sita and Tara. The Pancha Kanyas are supposed to signify the Pancha Bhutha or the five elements of Nature. Legend has it that all of an individual's sins are washed off simply by uttering the name of these Pancha Kanyas.

Mandor town is 32 kilometers from Jodhpur. It is said that Mandor is the place where Ravana married Mandodari and hence that name. There is an ancient protected structure in Mandor which the local people call Ravan Jee Ki Chanwari which means the altar where the marriage was performed. Dave Brahmins there say that they are the descendants of Ravana.
