Manuel 'Manolo' Sanchís Hontiyuelo (born 23 May
1965 in Madrid) is a former Spanish footballer, who played as a sweeper.
A part of the famous Quinta del Buitre which stemmed
from the Real Madrid youth ranks, he was the only of
its five members to play his entire career for the capital side. Sanchís' father, Manuel Sanchís Martínez, also
played for Real Madrid (1964–71), and both were Spanish
internationals.
Club
career
A product of Real Madrid's prolific youth system,
Sanchís made his debut with the first team on December 4, 1983,
scoring the game's only goal at Real Murcia, and finishing his debut
season with a further 17 appearances (and two goals) for the
main side.
During the following 15 seasons, Sanchís only appeared in less
than 30 matches in two, and was instrumental in the
merengues' several conquests, including six leagues, two Champions League and two UEFA
Cups. In 1999–2000, he appeared sparingly, but
still helped to the club's 8th European Cup.
Sanchís retired in 2001, having appeared in 710 overall matches
for Real Madrid (524 of those in the league), while also captaining the side
during 13 years.
International career
After excelling with the under-21s, with
which he won the 1986
European Championship, Sanchís made his senior debut that same
year, on November 12, in an Euro 1988 qualifier against
Romania (1–0 win).
He went on to gain 48 full caps, appearing at both UEFA Euro 1988
and the 1990 FIFA World Cup. His last match
was a friendly against the United States,
on 11 March 1992.
