Airport

Marakei is served by Marakei Airport at the northern tip of the island (close to the village of Rawannawi), which offers Air Kiribati and Coral Sun Airways flights to Abaiang, Butaritari, and the international airport at Tarawa.

2009 solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse was visible on Marakei on 22 July 2009. Albeit not on the central line, the duration was still 4 minutes. Unfortunately the totality itself was completely clouded out on the island, but an astronomical expedition who had come by ship was able to use this ship to find a clear spot at sea on only a short distance away.
