Maria Antonia "Toni" Berrios is a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives, representing the 39th District since 2003. Berrios is the first Puerto Rican woman to serve in the Illinois House of Representatives.

Questions have been raised about the funding Berrios received when running uncontested in 2002 as 60 percent of the campaign donations were received from tax attorneys, appraisal companies and real estate firms. Almost all of these entities were not in her district. However, it is well known that her father, long-time Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Joseph Berrios, is in political position to hand-out property tax breaks to these entities through the government agency he heads. While this not illegal it is considered highly questionable. ^[1] ^[2] ^[3]

For the first time in her tenure as a state representative, Ms Berrios will face a challenger in the general election. Green Party candidate Jeremy Karpen, a therapist and domestic violence counselor, will face Berrios in the November election.
