Marian Lois Shields Robinson (born Marian L. Shields July 30, 1937) is the mother of Michelle Obama and the mother-in-law of President Barack Obama. She is the only living grandparent of Malia and Sasha Obama.
Robinson, now a widow, married Fraser Robinson in 1960.[1] In addition to their daughter Michelle, they also had a son, Craig, the current coach of the Oregon State men's basketball team. Robinson was formerly a secretary at Spiegel catalog and a bank. While Michelle and Barack Obama campaigned in 2008, Robinson tended the Obamas' young children. Early in January 2009, it was reported that Robinson would move into the White House with the rest of the First Family in order to provide further transition support for her grand-daughters.[2] She is the first live-in grandmother there since Elivera M. Doud during the Eisenhower administration. Some media outlets have dubbed Robinson the "First Granny".[3][4]
