Marianas Trench is a Juno award nominated Canadian punk rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia signed to 604 Records. The band released their first full length album Fix Me on October 3, 2006. Some of the demos the band sent out four years before appear on the album. The band says their biggest musical influences are Queen, Foo Fighters, Green Day, The Beach Boys and Ben Folds Five.[1]

The name "Marianas Trench" came from the Mariana Trench, the deepest known point in the world. The band has been known to create stories of how they decided on it in interviews.

The band released their second studio album on February 24, 2009 entitled Masterpiece Theatre.

History

Early Years

Josh Ramsay started a solo career and needed a supporting band during touring. He managed to recruit high school friend Matt Webb and local musicians Morgan Hempsted and Steve Marshall. The band worked out so well that they decided to form a band named Ramsay Fiction. After signing to 604 Records in early 2003, they changed their name and became Marianas Trench. Marshall and Hempsted would leave the band around this time and Matt would call Mike Ayley, an old friend to join the band who would become the band's new bass guitarist.[2] Matt would also switch from being the band's pianist to become the bands new lead guitarist. The band presented an award during the 2007 MMVA's. They made an appearance on the TV show Kyle XY and their song "Alibis" from their debut album Fix Me, was put on the soundtrack. Shake Tramp peaked on #1 on the Much Music Countdown,iTunes Canada Digital Download and was later nominated for Video of the Year at the Juno Awards. Marianas Trench started getting formally introduced and started getting popular in their 2006 "Virgin Festival" in Vancouver.

Masterpiece Theatre

"Masterpiece Theatre" the band's follow-up album, was released as planned on February 24, 2009 as stated on the band's MySpace on January 22, 2009. The title track "Masterpiece Theatre I" is the basis of the entire album. The sixth track is titled "Masterpiece Theatre II," which is an expansion of the first track. The twelfth and final track is titled "Masterpiece Theatre III," which quotes each previous song in the album in addition to incorporating rhythms, melodies, and concepts from the other tracks. Contrary to popular belief, each "Masterpiece Theatre" track (I, II, and III) were written separately. The original track was not written and then rewritten three times. The album debuted at #4 on the Canadian Albums Chart one week after being released. "Cross My Heart" became the band's second song to peak at #1 on both the Much Music Countdown and iTunes Canada Digital Download. "Cross My Heart" was nominated for four MMVAs in 2009 and was certified platinum in Canada[3]. Recently after, Marianas Trench reached the #1 spot with the song All To Myself on Much Music's MOD. All To Myself also made Platinum certification in August 2009 in Canada.[4] Masterpiece Theatre also received a WCMA for Best Pop Recording on September 20, 2009.[5]

The music video for "Beside You" premiered on MuchOnDemand on October 30th, 2009.

They played 5 free Olympic shows in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
