The objective of the game is to knock all the enemies in a particular level off ledges. This is accomplished by hitting them using Koopa shells, of which there are always two—if one shell is knocked into a pit, another appears to take its place. The majority of Mario's enemies need to be hit on the side (i.e. with a shell thrown from the background while the enemies are in the foreground or vice versa).
The player can choose to begin from any of the first forty stages.
A condensed remake of Mario Clash was used as a mini-game in WarioWare for the Game Boy Advance.

Mario Clash is a game released for the Virtual Boy . In this game Mario throws Koopa shells at enemies on platforms adjacent to himself. For instance, if Mario is in the background he will throw the Koopa shell toward an enemy in the foreground. Mario Clash is considered a remake of the original Mario Bros. video game. Due to the low sales of the Virtual Boy this game was not released outside of Japan and North America.
