From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marilena Buck (stage name Marli Buck), born in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England is a singer songwriter who also plays pianoand guitar. She is of Eritrean, Italian, Welsh and English extraction.

She started writing songs at the age of 11, after being bullied at school. After attending Blackpool and The Fylde College's School of Performing Arts she secured a place at The Guildford School of Acting. After two years tho, she was offered a recording contract by music mogul Chris Blackwell ( Island) and moved to new York to pursue her dream. Unfortunately, it took a few years for Chris's new label Palm Pictures to be up and running and this meant her career was put on hold. A few years later Marli then signed to V2 but after losing her A&R she was then dropped. Still determined to continue her dream Marli took on a full time job so she could make her own cd. This happened with the help of Setanta records boss Keith Cullen and her writing partner Benny di Massa. It wasn't enough however and without the funds to follow it through Marli didn't know where to turn.

Musical career

Fame Academy

In 2002, after two record deals had fallen through, she successfully auditioned and was chosen to appear on the BBC talent show Fame Academy 1. She impressed the judges in week one by singing the Ednaswap song Torn, made famous by Natalie Imbruglia, which garnered her Star Pupil. She was also praised for her duets, Fields of Gold (Sting) with Malachi Cush and Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) (Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel) with Ainslie Henderson. She was put on probation and was voted out of the academy in week five after singing Tracks of My Tears. This song and the duets are included on the Fame Academy album which reached #2 in the UK compilation charts. She gained notoriety in the press after leaving the Academy when she was seen kissing personal tutor Jeremy Milnes in a nightclub.

Subsequent career

After leaving the academy she failed to get a recording contract, but continued to write and record as an independent artist, performing live at various venues in London and the UK. In 2005 she supported The Christians on their tour of the UK. In September 2005 Song 4 Lovers, a song she co-wrote for Liberty X, reached #5 in the UK singles chart. In November 2005 she performed at the Royal Variety Performance in Cardiff, singing backing vocals for Ozzy Osbourne.

In 2006 she played a one off show in the Carling Academy Islington with Sandi Thom, before embarking on a sell out tour of the UK supporting Journey South, (from the 16 September to the 9th of October) performing stripped down versions of her songs with her band (Mark Pusey, James Sims (Jim E. Sims) and Jason Huxley).

Marli Buck is signed to Sony BMG and her debut album was due to be released in January 2007 but with a departure of her key A&R Marli found herself once again with no deal.

After a turbulent career and personal life, Marli is now married to producer/writer Michael Harwood. She continues to write for other artists working with the likes of Russell Watson, Elysium and new boy band Vice
