Marouane Chamakh (Arabic: مروان الشماخ, born on 10 January 1984) is a Moroccan footballer who plays for Bordeaux as a striker. Although born and raised in France, he chose to play international football for Morocco due to his Moroccan parentage.[2]
Club career
Since 2002, Chamakh has played for Bordeaux. His 13 goals in the French League in 2008-09 helped them win the title, ending Lyon's seven year domination. Chamakh's current contract is due to expire in the summer of 2010, meaning he will be able to move clubs without FC Girondins de Bordeaux receiving a transfer fee.
Due to his good form, there was much speculation about his future, with English clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool showing interest.[3].
On 6 February 2010, Chamakh claimed he wanted a move to Arsenal.[4][5] On 5 March 2010, Chamakh confirmed that he will be joining Arsenal in the summer on a Bosman free transfer.[6] However, Arsenal are yet to confirm the signing.
International career
Chamakh made his international debut for Morocco in 2003 and was part of the side that reached the 2004 African Cup of Nations Final. Chamakh’s popularity in Morocco soared when he netted a last-gasp equalizer against North African rivals Algeria in the quarter-final tie which Morocco went on to win 3-1.
