From the south, MD 550 begins at MD 26 in Libertytown. The route terminates at the end of state maintenance south of the Pennsylvania state line. It is a two-lane undivided arterial route for its entire length.
Maryland Route 550 runs from Libertytown, Frederick County north to Pen Mar, Washington County, Maryland. It travels through a number of communities, including Thurmont, where it intersects U.S. 15. Originally, the route ended there. In 1977, the 550 designation was applied to the routing of MD 81, which was then decommissioned. This was done to provide a continuous route number and to minimize the confusion with Interstate 81, which also runs through Washington County.
