Route 88, is a north–south state highway in southeastern Massachusetts.

Route description

Route 88 starts at Interstate 195 just northeast of the Lakeside neighborhood in Westport close to the border of Fall River. The arterial highway runs 13.5 miles (21.7 km) south through the town and finally ends at John Reed Road and Horseneck Beach State Reservation in southern Westport, just after crossing the east branch of the Westport River. During the summer, Route 88 is the most-used route to and from Horseneck Beach.

While it is an arterial highway with five at-grade crossings, Route 88 crosses the following routes with offramp access:

  • US-6 (also known locally as State Road), just southeast of the Lakeside neighborhood in Westport
  • Route 177 (also known locally as Bulgarmarsh Road or American Legion Highway), just north of Giffords Corner (neighborhood) in Westport.

Route 88 is peculiar in that long stretches of it do not meet the criteria under Massachusetts statutes for a limited-access or express state highway -- these must be divided highways -- yet signs have been posted unlawfully prohibiting bicycling, which would be convenient and safe with its wide shoulders.
