Gubler, who also went to The Meadows School, is a high school graduate of the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing and Visual Arts, where he majored in acting, because the school didn't offer his first love, film making.[1] He is a college graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in film directing. He also attended UC Santa Cruz. Gubler's parents were both born in Las Vegas and his mother, Marilyn Gubler, was the first woman to serve as Republican state Chairman. His grandfather Maxwell Kelch was the first president of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and founded Las Vegas' first radio station (KENO). Gubler's sister Laura Dahl is a fashion designer who is based in New York City. He has a brother who is twelve years his junior, who appeared in the music video for Reagan by Whirlwind Heat (which Gubler directed).
While at NYU film school, Gubler was found by a model scout and then worked as a model with DNA Model Management for Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs and American Eagle[2] among others. He was also ranked #46 on models.com list of top 50 male models. While Matthew is a well-known actor in television show "Criminal Minds", he also takes part in directing as well
After he began modeling, Gubler had an internship for Wes Anderson, who encouraged him to audition for a part in his movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Gubler did, and landed the role of Nico (a.k.a Intern #1). This led to his role as Dr. Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds.[2] He also had a small role in the 2006 film RV as the disreputable Joe Joe and voiced the character of Simon in 2007's Alvin and the Chipmunks, alongside Jason Lee, Justin Long and Jesse McCartney.
While making The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Gubler made the documentary entitled Matthew Gray Gubler's Life Aquatic Intern Journal, a behind-the-scenes view of the making of the film, which was later included in some DVD releases.[3] Gubler has directed and starred in a series of self-deprecating mockumentaries called Matthew Gray Gubler: the Unauthorized Documentary[4] in which he parodies Hollywood behavior, which are filmed while on the set of Criminal Minds. A follow-up "Matthew Gray Gubler: The Authorized Documentary" was also made, although only two episodes are currently available.[1][5][4] He directed, edited, and co-produced the music video for "Don't Shoot Me Santa" by the rock band The Killers.[5] He has also directed one episode of Criminal Minds, entitled "Mosley Lane". It originally aired March 3rd, 2010, making it episode 16 of season 5.
