Maverick Films is an American film production company which was founded by Madonna and CEO of Maverick Records, Guy Oseary. [1] It is the film division of entertainment company, Maverick and owned by Warner Music Group. As of 2008, the company has dissolved and been relaunched as Imprint Entertainment.[2]

Founded as Maverick Picture Company in April 1992 by Madonna, Frederick DeMann, Ronnie Dashev and Warner Music Group. It was the film division of Maverick, an entertainment company which also owns Maverick Records and was part of a $60 million deal between Madonna and Time Warner.[3] The first film it produced was Dangerous Game in 1993, directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Madonna, Harvey Keitel and James Russo.

In 2001, it became Maverick Films which was founded by Madonna and Guy Oseary. The company develops and supports independent producers, who are encouraged to find, acquire and develop a broad range of properties that appeal to their individual artistic and commercial tastes. This approach has enabled Maverick to place nearly a dozen projects in various stages of development with major and mini-major motion picture studios. The company has had moderate success with motion pictures such as Agent Cody Banks and television drama The Riches. [1]

As of June 2004, Madonna no longer owns any interest in the company as she was bought out as the result of a lawsuit between Maverick and Warner Music Group. [4] She currently develops movies through her production company, Semtex Films. [5]

Dissolution and relaunch

Oseary resigned from the company in August 2008 and Mark Morgan relaunched Maverick Films under a new name, Imprint Entertainment. Morgan has acquired sole ownership of Maverick's current projects and development. Oseary, however, has retained rights to the Maverick name and will still get a production credit on any film and TV projects that were already in development before his departure. As part of the change, Morgan has brought aboard Becker Entertainment principal Michael Becker, who will be a partner. The addition of Becker means Imprint is also expanding into talent management.[6]

Maverick/Imprint already had more than two dozen projects in various stages, including the 2008 feature Twilight, based on the bestselling novel. In post-production is the Nelson McCormick-helmed The Stepfather for Screen Gems and the MGM project Hit and Run, starring Laura Breckenridge. Other productions are The Stanford Prison Experiment, directed by Christopher McQuarrie and the Chris Columbus film Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief based on the Rick Riordan book series, for Fox Searchlight Pictures. .[7]

Maverick's TV production division will also now become Imprint Television.[8]
