From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Max Stern (1898-1982) was born in Fulda, Germany and emigrated to America in 1926. He established and built the Hartz Mountain Pet Food Company, which eventually became one of America’s most successful private companies.

He helped many charitable organizations both in America and Israel. He was a leading Jewish philanthropist and communal lay leader.

Max Stern died in 1982, leaving his son Leonard N. Stern to carry on the family business.

Stern founded the Stern College for Women of Yeshiva University in New York City, which is associated with Modern Orthodox Judaism, with a major grant, in honor of his late parents Emanuel and Caroline Stern.
