Biography

Massimo Vergara Poeti-Marentini was born in Turin, Italy, but grew up in South America. He attended Westminster School, London, and completed law studies at Georgetown University. As a child, he also obtained degrees in composition and musical aesthetics from Juilliard, painting from The Art Students League of New York and courses with Louis Griffel, director of the Cape Cod School of Art, who taught him impressionism and the new modern techniques, which were later mastered at the Cape Cod Art Association, in Barnstable, Massachussetts[1]

Despite he has written under pen names, he is regarded by critics as Corey C. Shouse[2], Jacques Gillard and H. Hoyos[3] to be one of the most precocious and original voices of his generation, his first short stories appeared when he was only 16, published in newspapers and magazines[4]. El Mar (The Sea), a story of a child whose dying mother is the only thing between him and the realization of his wish to see the sea for the first time, won him acclaim and became part of the selection of a young literature list in Europe before it was translated and included in selections in Russian, Czech, Greek, Portuguese and Finnish[5]. This work was followed by a small poetry book, Las Flores Áureas (The Golden Blossoms) that was published in an edition sponsored by the Italian government and UNESCO[6].

Max Vergara Poeti has written articles and interviews for El Tiempo, Clarín (newspaper) in Argentina and Corriere della Sera. In the United States, he has been contributor to World Literature Today. He’s best known for his translations, and has published versions in Italian, English and Spanish of Robert Frost, Angelos Sikelianos and Odysseus Elytis, Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer and the Mexican poet and writer José Gorostiza. He is also the authorized translator in Spanish of Nobel Prize Winner Patrick White. Profesionally, he is currently Art Counselor of Fondation Princesse Grace in Monaco, and Chief of the Foreign Affairs Office of Fondazione Alice Asburgo Lorena in Turin. He is now resident in Italy.
