Jupiter was born in La Paz, Mexico. Her family moved to Melbourne when she was one, then relocated to Sydney when she was four, where she grew up in Busby, a suburb in south-western Sydney.
In 2003 she released her first album on Mother Tongues, the first label in the world dedicated to developing women in hip hop music.[1]
Also In 2003, eleven-piece Latin/jazz/hip hop band, Son Veneno, asked Maya to accompany them at The Belligen Global Music Festival. The combination have since performed at numerous festivals including Homebake, Bacardi festival and supported Kelis.
Jupiter released her first album, Today in 2003. She took over as host of Triple J's hip-hop show in 2004. She is also a regular host on Channel V[2], and holds hip-hop workshops in community centres. In 2006, Jupiter joined forces with fellow hip-hop artist MC Trey and DJ Nick Toth to form the group, Foreign Heights, which released its first single, It Goes On featuring Mr Zux in November of that year. The group's self-titled album was released in Australia nationally in January 2007 and performed at the Big Day Out in the same month.
On April 14, 2008 Hau from Koolism took over from Jupiter as the host of Triple J's weekly Hip Hop Show, with Jupiter leaving to further her solo career in the US.[3][4]
