This article is about the unit of data. For the ReBoot character, see Megabyte (ReBoot).
.The megabyte is a multiple of the unit byte for digital information storage or transmission with two different values depending on context: 1048576 bytes (10242) generally for computer memory;[1][2][3] and one million bytes (106, see prefix mega-) generally for computer storage.^ A unit of storage equal to 1,048,576 bytes or 8,388,608 bits.

A megabyte is a large number used when talking about hard drives or computer memory. One megabyte is 1 million bytes.

Until December 1998, when the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) first defined a mebibyte as 220, or 1,048,576 bytes, megabyte also meant either 1,048,576 bytes, or 1,024,000 bytes. Casual computer users still often use megabyte to mean one of these numbers.
