Melissa Mark-Viverito is the New York City Council member for the topmost part of the Upper East Side and for Spanish Harlem. A 1991 graduate of Columbia University, Viverito is of Italian-American and Hispanic descent.
She is a former member of Community Board 11, coordinator of the movement Todo Nueva York con Vieques[1][2] and president of Mujeres del Barrio. Viverito ran unsuccessfully against Philip Reed for City Council in district 8 in 2003.
Before running for City Council, Viverito was an employee of Local 1199, an influential health care workers union. In January 2009, Viverito criticized the voting record of newly appointed New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand on immigration. [3]
