Melur is a town and a municipality in Madurai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Melur is called "Thaikramam" (Mother of Villages). Melur is the biggest Taluk of Madurai District.

Melur is the leading manufacturer and exporter of ploughs. Granite is the most important business in Melur. Very high quality granite is exported to all around the world from Melur. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people of Melur Taluk.

• Alagar Koil is a temple located 20 km from Melur. It's a historical temple under a dense forest and mountain. One of the Lord Muruga's ARUPADAI VEEDU - PAZHAMUTHIR CHOLAI is in the mountain...Theertha Thotti is famous for that temple. The non stop theertham is believed that come from Ganja.
• Alagar Koil Monkeys are very famous for their naughtiness.
• A Siva temple is located in Melur.
• On the way to Melur from Madurai, a nice place Othakkadai is placed, where there is a beautiful mountain is placed named Yanamalai. A famous temple dedicated to Lord Narasimha is located at othakkadai.

The Pookkuli festival is celebrated every year by the Draupathi Amman Temple.The two important events are Biman - Keesakan Fight & the Pookkkuli.In the first event one person will be acting as Bima & other as Keesakan. The very appearance of Bima will have a terrifying effect on children.Keesakan will try to run away from Bima & the latter will chase him & kill him.The chase will go on in all main streets & it will be quite interesting to watch.On the Pookkuli day devotees who had already offered prayers to the Goddess will perform fire walking. Naagammal Temple Festival is celebrated grandly every year by the devotees. Poochorithal is the main event on the festival. Santhana Koodu Festival is celebrated in the mosques every year.
