Merle was living with his parents and older brother in Randolph, Cattaraugus County, New York at the time of the 1900 census, taken June 30, 1900. Merle, along with his parents and brother Gerald, were baptized on April 14, 1910 at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Sinclairville, New York. Merle, his parents, younger brother, a servant, and a great uncle were living in Ellery, Chautauqua, New York at the time of the 1910 census, taken May 2, 1910.

Merle married Alice Marian Washburg, daughter of Elmer John Washburg and Nellie Anderson, on July 25, 1914 at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Sinclairville, Chautauqua County, New York. In 1920, Merle, Alice, and two daughters were living on Newland Avenue in Jamestown, Chautauqua Coutny, New York. Merle worked as a ? at the Merring? Company. Merle, Alice, and their four children moved to Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio sometime between 1923 and 1930 as their fourth daughter was born about 1923 and they are living on 2138 West 61st Street in Cleveland, Ohio in the 1930 census. Merle worked as a truck driver for a Coal Company. Sometime in the early 1930s, the family returned to Chautauqua County. Merle died on May 30, 1978 in Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York.
