.Metal Gear (メタルギア ?, commonly abbreviated MG) is an overhead military action adventure game originally released in 1987 by Konami for the MSX2 computer standard in Japan and parts of Europe.^ If nothing else, the original Metal Gear Solid had a dignified flow to it: the characters were all rough sketches, all vaguely likable.

^ I’ve never played any of the Metal Gear games and i’m really not sure its worth it now.

^ Do not confuse this sentence for a compliment: there has never been and there will never again be a game quite like Metal Gear Solid 4 .

.Considered to be the progenitor of the stealth game genre, it was also the first video game designed by Hideo Kojima, who also directed many of the later Metal Gear sequels.^ If a Metal Gear Solid 4 had to be made, I think it would have served better to have another open ending, and possibly have nothing to do with the end of Metal Gear Solid 2, but I guess that would have defeated Kojima’s purpose on this one.

^ This brings us back to the subject of Metal Gear Solid 4 as a game: it’s not very good.

^ GilbertSmith Says: August 29th, 2008 at 1722 From the start, I wanted Kojima to say “Screw Metal Gear”, and then take the intruder-in-a-warzone concept into a whole new game.

[1] .A heavily altered port was produced for the Nintendo Entertainment System (without Kojima's involvement)[2], along with a remade version based on the original MSX2 game that was released for the PlayStation 2 as a bonus game in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.^ The Metal Gear Solid graphic novel.

^ With Metal Gear Solid 4 , Kojima came sprinting back.

^ Metal Gear Solid 2 was a joke.

.The game revolves around a special forces operative codenamed Solid Snake who goes into a solo infiltration mission into the fortified state of Outer Heaven to destroy Metal Gear, a bipedal walking tank capable of launching nuclear missiles from anywhere in the world.^ Metal Gear Solid 2 was a joke.

^ The Metal Gear Solid graphic novel.

^ Metal Gear Solid 4 was literally sitting right in front of me all this time.

Gameplay

Solid Snake avoiding a visual encounter with enemy soldiers (MSX2 version).
The player must navigate the main character, a military operative codenamed Solid Snake, through various locations, while avoiding visual contact and direct confrontation with patrolling guards. .If the player is seen, the game enters the "Alert Mode."^ Hacking P2 Controls CPU Codes (by HyperHacker) This only works for a game where P2 can normally play and in 1 Player mode the CPU takes control of them.

^ As is, the pacing of this tale blesses the player of an ethereal understanding of why Kojima never actually got a novel published before he entered the games industry.

In this situation, Snake must escape from enemy's sight in order to resume infiltration. The method of escaping varies depending on the circumstances behind discovery:
.
  • If Snake is seen and only a single exclamation mark (!) appears over an enemy's head, only the enemies in the player's present screen will attack and Snake can escape by simply moving to an adjacent screen.
  • However, if two exclamation marks (!!) appear over the enemy (or the player triggers an alarm by being spotted by a camera, infrared sensor or by using an unsilenced weapon), reinforcements from outside the screen will appear as well.^ Then Raiden and Vamp fight again and you actually are controlling Snake doing something else only the solution to this dilemma is to split the screen in fucking two because absolutely nothing one half of the screen is doing means fuck all to the other half.

Snake can only escape by eliminating all incoming enemies, going outdoors, or by simply moving to a different floor.
.The player starts the game unarmed, but eventually gains access to a variety of firearms and explosives, starting with the Beretta M92F and working their way up to guided missiles and the RPG7 rocket launcher.^ Start up a game with Player 2 playing, search for 1.

Ammo and supplies for each weapon are limited, but are easily replenished. Weapons can not only be used to kill enemies, but also to clear obstacles such as hollow walls or electrified floors. Snake can also use his fists to punch and defeat patrolling enemies. Occasionally if the player defeats a guard with punches without alerting anyone, the defeated guard will yield a single unit of rations or an ammo box that can be picked up. .In addition to enemy guards, the player will also be confronted by mercenaries who will challenge the player to combat, serving as the game's boss characters.^ The point is that, for a split-second at least , the game makes you care about the boss characters.

Each door will only open to its corresponding key cards. Information can be obtained by rescuing hostages being held captive within the buildings. After rescuing five hostages, the player's rank will increase by one star (with the maximum rank being four stars), allowing for carrying capacity and maximum health. However, if a hostage is killed, the player is demoted to the previous rank.
A transceiver is available for the player to communicate with their commanding officer (Big Boss) or one of the resistance members operating covertly near Outer Heaven. .Each of Snake's allies specializes in a specific subject (i.e.: Big Boss provides information on weapons and items, Schneider knows the layout of the fortress, and Diane knows the weaknesses of most of the bosses).^ It didn’t make complete sense with the last game, but it was there, and now we know the story of Big Boss.

The player must keep track of their allies' frequency numbers in order to contact them. .All of the game's radio messages are dependent on the rooms where the player is located.^ It all depends on how the game is programmed.

Among the prisoners Snake rescues includes Gray Fox (Grey Fox in the MSX2 version), a FOXHOUND agent who was captured during a previous mission; Dr. Pettrovich (Dr. Madnar in later releases), the scientist who designed the Metal Gear weapon; and his daughter Ellen, who was kidnapped along with him.
The bosses of the game includes Shoot Gunner[3] (renamed Shotmaker in later versions), a former Spetsnaz agent specializing in the riot gun; Machine Gun Kid, a former SAS operative armed with a machine gun; Fire Trooper, a former GSG 9 operative who uses a flamethrower; Coward Duck (Dirty Duck in later releases), a boomerang throwing terrorist who shields himself with hostages; Arnold (Bloody Brad in later releases), an android designed by Dr. Pettrovich; and the legendary mercenary who founded Outer Heaven, whose true identity is unknown until the end of the game.

.Sometime near the end of the 20th century (established as 1995 in the sequel Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake), 200km north of Galzburg, South Africa, lies Outer Heaven, a fortified state founded by a "legendary mercenary". Word had gotten out to the western world that deep within the Outer Heaven stronghold, a weapon of mass destruction is being constructed.^ Metal Gear Solid 2 was a joke.

^ The Metal Gear Solid graphic novel.

^ Then Metal gear Solid 3 came out, and once again, I was completely satisfied at the end.

Special Forces unit FOXHOUND sends Gray Fox, one of their top agents, to infiltrate the fortress, assess the situation and neutralize the threat. .Days later, contact with Gray Fox is lost and his last transmission simply reads "METAL GEAR..."^ We’ve read interviews for years now in which he complains that Metal Gear Solid is a ball and chain.

^ Kojima had said that Metal Gear Solid 3 was to be his last, and following its noble climax, we didn’t scorn him for wanting to move on to other things.

^ One day, sitting on a porch somewhere in Alabama, Metal Gear Solid 4 might have been our cousin; today, it is our enemy.

Operative Solid Snake, FOXHOUND's newest recruit, is ordered by squad leader Big Boss to rescue Gray Fox and carry out his mission, "Operation: Intrude N313".
Upon insertion into Outer Heaven, Snake makes contact with local resistance members Schneider, Diane, and Jennifer. Using all of his skills and the equipment he procured on site, he manages to rescue Fox. He learns from Fox that Metal Gear is the codename of a nuclear warhead-equipped bipedal walking tank, which can engage and dominate in all forms of combat as well as launch its nuclear warheads from any location. .Outer Heaven plans to use Metal Gear to impose itself as the new world superpower.^ I wouldn’t argue about the content itself, because if the Metal Gear saga were on a DVD, I wouldn’t watch it (don’t like anime, thanks).

In order to destroy Metal Gear, and topple the Outer Heaven mercenaries, Snake rescues the lead engineer of Metal Gear, Dr. Pettrovich, and his daughter, Ellen. .Armed with information on how to destroy Metal Gear, his skill and indomitable spirit, Snake fights through the entire Outer Heaven force.^ Despite Metal Gear Solid 4 ’s not being a “great game”, it ends in the tradition of great games: by forcing the player to play something else.

^ Tetris , Metal Gear Solid 4 turns into a somewhat shockingly brilliant fighting game at the end.

^ The “problem” with Metal Gear Solid 4 is hardly the self-importance, or the stupidity of its narrative — it’s how damnedly “well” the narrative and the game are married.

He begins to notice that traps being set for him are too precise, and wonders how information on his activities is being tracked. Moreover, Schneider is ambushed by hostiles and is presumed dead after losing contact with Snake.
Big Boss reveals himself to Solid Snake in the game's final battle (MSX2 version).
.Upon breaching the core of the base, Snake is able to neutralize Metal Gear before it reaches completion.^ Upon completing Metal Gear Solid 4 , we put a DVD of “The Graduate” in our PlayStation 3 and watched it, upscaled.

^ Then Metal gear Solid 3 came out, and once again, I was completely satisfied at the end.

.As he makes his way out of the compound's basement, he is confronted by the mercenary leader of Outer Heaven, who turns out to be Big Boss.^ Or in FFX you make your way through a mass of fans who want autographs from you.

^ Then the number one entry is the game that is made by one dude with who is WAY out of bounds, so to speak, and it’s a terrible game.

^ You trigger certain events by making your way along the laid-out paths.

The corrupt leader reveals that he had been using his connections to steal military intelligence, establish his own mercenary force, and fund his activities. It was his aim to have Outer Heaven become the world's greatest superpower, able to bring even the western nations to their knees. He had the rookie Snake sent in, hoping to have him captured and feed misinformation to authorities, but had quite obviously underestimated Snake's capabilities.
.Having lost Metal Gear and much of his force, Big Boss starts the self-destruct sequence for the compound, and promises he will not die alone; Snake will join him.^ Some Metal Gear fans think it’s too tight, too much like an FPS. Some FPS fans think it’s too loose, too much like Metal Gear .

^ Kojima had said that Metal Gear Solid 3 was to be his last, and following its noble climax, we didn’t scorn him for wanting to move on to other things.

^ Despite Metal Gear Solid 4 ’s not being a “great game”, it ends in the tradition of great games: by forcing the player to play something else.

An underground battle ensues, and despite injury, Snake defeats Big Boss and escapes the Outer Heaven compound as it crumbles in flames behind him. .After the end credits, a message from Big Boss is displayed saying that he will meet Solid Snake again.^ In fact, Snake meeting The End in the first place was never predetermined to happen, it was only ever a possibility.

Release history

MSX2

.Metal Gear was originally released on the MSX2 home computer in Japan on July 12, 1987, with an official English version released for the European market on September 1987. Most of the radio messages were edited or removed in the English version, including Big Boss' comments on every item and weapon found by the player.^ Despite Metal Gear Solid 4 ’s not being a “great game”, it ends in the tradition of great games: by forcing the player to play something else.

^ MGS4, like every other modern Metal Gear game, dares to give you more story than you want.

^ Renfrew Says: September 2nd, 2008 at 338 After finishing Metal Gear Solid 2, I was happy.

.According to a fan-translation project, only 56% of the original Japanese text was translated in the English version.^ These are the only officially endorsed sites by macrox on the most up to date versions of the text.

[4] .The translation contains many examples of Engrish, such as consistently misspelling "destroy" as "destoroy". The Japanese version's manual contains exclusive content not found in the English manual, such as character profiles with illustrations[5][6], brief descriptions of the game's bosses[7][8], and the complete specifications of the Metal Gear tank.^ Many hackers that use the memory editor have found many an unexpected code by simply looking around for "patterns" such as groupings of 3 for size mods, location mods etc.

The MSX2 version of Metal Gear was released for the Wii Virtual Console in Japan on December 8, 2009.[10]

Nintendo Entertainment System

The level designs were altered for the NES version, which includes an extensive outdoor sequence prior to reaching the first building.
.A reprogrammed version for the Family Computer was released in Japan on December 22, 1987. While the MSX2 version of this game was never released in the U.S., the Nintendo Entertainment System version came to North America in June 1988 (published by Konami's Ultra Games division), followed by PAL version in Europe and Australia in March 1989. According to Kojima's account, the NES port was developed by another Konami team at Tokyo without his involvement, who were given the source code from the MSX2 version without the consent of Kojima or anyone who worked on the original MSX2 version.^ Porting** Porting is taking a code from one version of a game, and making it work on another version of that same game.

The player must reach a transport truck at the end of the first jungle area that takes Snake to the front entrance of Building 1. The player can also use other transport trucks that serve as shortcuts to the entrances of the other buildings, although the player cannot do much in those areas without the required equipment. .The basement floor that connected Building 1 and 2 in the MSX2 version is turned into two separate (but still connected) buildings, Building 4 and 5 respectively, that are only reachable by going through two different jungle mazes located at the outdoor areas between Building 1 & 2 and Building 2 & 3 respectively.^ It is sometimes meaningful to split an 8-Code up into two 3-Codes if we want only one part of it to function.

The Metal Gear robot at the end of the game is missing; instead the player destroys an immobile Super Computer guarded by four soldiers.[2][12] .The Hind D boss on the roof of Building 1 was also replaced by two armed turret gunners called "Twin Shot". Other changes includes the lack of the second alert phase, different background music, the removal of the Flying Army's ability to hover and the removal of Big Boss' message after the end credits.^ The other plus it has is its ability to offer several warning as changes are made to its code database.

Like the English localization of the MSX2 version, the English localization of the NES game contains numerous examples of grammatically-incorrect phrases, such as "Contact missing our Grey Fox"[14], "The truck have started to move!"[15], and "I feel asleep!!"[16]
The English localization of the NES port's manual and packaging swayed from the game's actual storyline. .The game's main villain (whose identity is not revealed until the end of the game) is mentioned to be "Colonel Vermon CaTaffy", while Snake's commanding officer is renamed "Commander South".[17] Additionally, Solid Snake's back-story is embellished, with the manual claiming that he participated in the Grenada invasion prior to joining FOXHOUND.[18] It should be noted that these alterations to the game's plot only appear in the game's manual, but never in the game itself; moreover, the plot summary in the Japanese Famicom version's manual, along with Solid Snake's character profile, is identical to the MSX2 version's Japanese manual.^ This late in the game, though, your only options is to find a newer version for sale somwhere.

So long as zero remains, one will eventually grow to 100 again. And so our goal was to erase Zero. Even the mighty Patriots began with a single man. That one man's desires grew huge, bloated; absorbed technology; began to manipulate the economy. We realized too late that we had created a beast. .We had helped turn Zero into 100. His sin...^ As Halo ends by turning into a Driving Game and Sin and Punishment ends by turning into Missile Command , as the kids in the movie “The Wizard” had to compete in the then-unreleased Super Mario Bros.

A mere set of norms. The Patriots were those norms - a neural network reduced to its simplest form. That's what they really represented... Uniformity without individual will, without change. But then one day, those norms suddenly deviated from that pattern, and underwent a mutation. It was like the birth of a new life form... The System found a new way to propagate itself... War. The norms the Patriots had crafted for their unified state quickly became dependent on a single business... The war economy. Meanwhile, the political cause of creating a "cleaner, safer battlefield" provided a convenient catalyst. By then, the System was no longer being steered by Zero's will -- or anyone else's. It was then that the norms - manifested as AIs, the inheritors of Zero's will... began to reproduce and take on a life of their own. Zero's original intent was to carry on The Boss's will and establish a unified world state... An inside world. But his successors failed to carry on his will. Eventually, JD became the very age itself, propagating its will as it pleased. And this age chose to act through economics instead of nation-states. Powered by the industrial and digital revolutions that came before it... this age gave birth to a twisted economic revolution - a battlefield revolution. It created a new world without substance. .In this new world, there were no ideologies, no principles, no ideals...^ January 08, 2009 in News 18 There's no doubt Killzone 2 is looking to be a very big title for Sony with it's fun gameplay and beautiful graphics.

So long as zero remains... One... will eventually grow to 100 again. And so... our goal... was to erase Zero. Even the mighty Patriots began with a single man. Plot

Translated from the Japanese MSX2 and Famicom version's manual:
"Near the end of the 20th century, a special forces unit was founded in secrecy in order to deal with local insurgency, regional conflicts, and terrorist activities. Its name is Special Forces Group FOXHOUND. The unit specializes in carrying out unconventional warfare by infiltrating into hostile territories in total secrecy which are too politically sensitive to intervene through normal military force. They are regarded as the modern day equivalent of ninjas."
At South Africa, 200km north of Garzburgh, lies Outer Heaven, a fortified military state founded during the late 1980's by a mercenary who was said to be a hero and a lunatic at the same time... Something was now amidst at Outer Heaven. A dreadful new type of weapon of mass destruction that could change the history of warfare was being developed. Gray Fox, a member of FOXHOUND, was sent to gather information on the new super weapon. However, contact with Gray Fox is lost several days later and his last transmission simply says "Metal Gear"... Could Gray Fox's disappearance be evidence of this new weapon?
Orders are given to FOXHOUND once again. This time, the infiltrator is Solid Snake, a rookie soldier who was recently enlisted into FOXHOUND. His objective is to ascertain the whereabouts of Gray Fox, uncover the true nature of Metal Gear and destroy it if necessary.
Alone and armed with nothing but a wireless transceiver, Solid Snake is sent to the battlefield for the first time. It is said that Outer Heaven has gathered many of the world's most elite mercenaries from several nations. Can Solid Snake truly carry out his mission?
"Solid Snake." The voice of Big Boss, the supreme commander of FOXHOUND, came out from the transceiver. "You're not in a field exercise, this is actual combat! I'll wish you good luck." He began hearing the sound of gunfire inside his head...

Metal Gear is an action-adventure video game series made by Konami since 1987. This series of video games are more about not being seen and hiding in order to win - getting into fights can make you lose.

The main character of the 'Metal Gear' games is named Solid Snake. He is a soldier who does sneaking (hiding) missions by himself, much like James Bond. He is a clone of a famous soldier named Big Boss. The games have a large amount of story about these two men and the things that happen to them. Many players say the games are like watching a James Bond movie or reading a book about spies.

The series is named after a type of robotic tank that is in every game. These robots are very dangerous and Solid Snake makes it his job to stop them.

The latest game, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has been made by Konami for the Playstation 3
