Michael Tinkham is Rumford Research Professor of Physics and Gordon McKay Research Professor of Applied Physics at Harvard University. Since gaining his PhD from MIT in 1954, Professor Tinkham has concentrated on superconductivity and published one of the classic textbooks on the subject in 1996. More recently he has focused on material properties where sample dimensions are in the nanometer range, including studies of nanowires and carbon nanotubes.
Prof. Tinkham was awarded the Fred E. Saalfeld Award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement in Science in 2005. He has also been fondly honored for his achievements by his colleagues in the Journal of Superconductivity.
