English Premiership side Aston Villa beat a host of clubs from across Europe to the signing of Ääritalo in July 2003,[1] who was regarded as a promising player at the club. Despite an impressive goalscoring record for Youth teams and Aston Villa Reserves, Ääritalo failed to settle and rejoined hometown club TPS Turku in February 2005. He was elected as a rookie of the year in 2006 and was one of the best players for Turku in 2007 when the side returned as medalists after 11 years. Ääritalo scored 8 goals with 6 assists in 26 appearances.
In June 2008, Portuguese BWINLIGA club C.D. Nacional was keen to sign him, but he was said to be too expensive and the player also said that he does not want to leave TPS for Nacional.[2]
Ääritalo was selected in the Finnish national squad by Roy Hodgson in August 2007 and also has U16, U18 and U19 caps for Finland.
