It lies in the western part of the county, near Etowah and Fletcher. It is home to approximately 8,000 people, and it was incorporated into a city in 2003, mostly thanks to the efforts of fireman Roger Snyder, who is now the current mayor.

Mills River is the second largest town in Henderson County, and it is home to one river, the Mills River, and two schools, Mills River Elementary and Glenn C. Marlow Elementary. The majority of the town's inhabitants are either Methodist or Baptist.
