From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dr. Mine Ener was a history professor at Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania who committed the filicide of her six-month old daughter, Raya Donagi. Dr. Ener had been suffering from post-partum depression and post-partum psychosis following the birth of Raya, who had been diagnosed with Down syndrome on August 4, 2003.[1]

Dr. Ener, being held in a closed psychiatric ward at a Minnesota prison and treated with anti-psychotic medications, committed suicide there on August 30, 2003 by smothering herself with a trash can liner.[2]

A media frenzy resulted from Ener's case. A plaque was installed in her memory at Villanova University, but was removed by outraged alumni donors to the school, a Catholic institution founded on tenets of compassion and social justice.
