Minecraft is a sandbox building game currently in development by Markus Persson, also known as "Notch". It was conceived as a clone of the game Infiniminer,[1] although Persson wants the gameplay to be more similar to that of Dwarf Fortress.[2] The game is written in Java, using the LWJGL game library.

The game features a visual theme centered on cubes and cuboids, and uses low-resolution (16x16 pixels) textures heavily.

Minecraft was first publicly announced on the TIGSource feedback forums, where it garnered much initial popularity, and which led to the creation of an Internet forum dedicated to Minecraft, a wiki, and an IRC channel.



Currently, Minecraft features two modes of gameplay, Creative and Survival. There is also indev mode, for people who have bought the game.

In Creative mode, the player is granted access to a number of preset blocks to build with, such as dirt, stone, coloured cloth, or wood, and is free to use any of these blocks to build in the game map. In this game mode, the player is not limited by the need to gather resources, or to avoid hostile creatures, and is not able to die from any environmental hazards, such as steep drops, drowning, or lava. This is currently the only game mode with multiplayer support.

Survival mode is similar to Creative mode in that the only goals are to build and gather points, but it also incorporates features such as hostile monsters, the need to gather resources before building (the player must gather dirt before building dirt, and mine then smelt gold ore before building gold, etc.), and environmental dangers.

In December 2009, Persson began allowing those who had pre-purchased the game to play a more recent (and potentially unstable) version of Minecraft, named "Indev", in a fashion similar to that of the nightly build system of many other software applications.

More game modes, such as Zombie Siege (a variation on Survival) and Capture the Flag, are currently in planning stages.[1]


Game maps

All default Minecraft maps are generated randomly, and may range in size from very small, to very large.

Some third-party level editors, such as JPiolho, ZOMG, or Omen, allow maps which are not basic terrain (as the default generator is only capable of semi-realistic terrain generation), and some types of maps have gained wide popularity in the community, such as expansive flat maps, maps consisting entirely of water (for underwater structures), and those mimicking a hell-like landscape or a giant mile-tall tree.


Minecraft's sandbox gameplay has received generally positive reactions.[3][4] On January 12, 2010, the number of registered users surpassed 100,000.[5]. On March 16, 2010, the number of users who bought the game reached a total of 10,000[6].
