Character description

Mothma is a child of Republic arbiter-general Man Mothma and Chandrila Governor Tanis Mothma. She was elected to represent the Bormea Sector in the Galactic Senate at 21 years old, finding her niche in supporting the rights of local systems. She is also friends with Senators Bail Organa and Padmé Amidala.

After Chancellor Palpatine declares the formation of the Empire, Mothma drafts the Petition of 2000 to protest his dictatorial powers, but does not sign the petition herself, together with Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan. Although she urged Organa to join her in publicly speaking out against Palpatine, Mothma recants after witnessing the Empire's subjugation of Kashyyyk. Despite their reluctant acceptance of Imperial rule, Mothma, Bail, and Garm Bel Iblis worked in secret to form what would eventually become known as the Rebel Alliance. She assumes full control of the group at Bel Iblis' expense following Bail Organa's death in the destruction of Alderaan by the Death Star.

Mothma also gave birth to a son who died in the aftermath of the Battle of Hoth and a daughter who eventually settled on New Alderaan.

After the events of Return of the Jedi, Mon Mothma assumes leadership of the New Republic. However, she had a close brush with death when a Caridan ambassador tried to assassinate her during a diplomatic visit to Coruscant by throwing her a drink laced with parasitic nanomachines. Mon Calamari Jedi Cilghal used his Force power to remove the nanomachines. Despite being taken out of danger, Mothma retires from public life, turning her position to Leia Organa Solo. Mothma eventually dies of old age shortly before the Yuuzhan Vong invasion.
