"Moskau " (german for Moscow) was a single by the German pop-act Genghis Khan from their 1979 self-titled debut album.
The song was released in Australia in 1980, the year of the 1980 Moscow Olympics.[1] Australia's Channel 7 used the song as the theme to their television coverage of the Moscow Olympics.[2] The song became a big hit in Australia, staying at #1 for five weeks.
The song also appears on their 1980 album Rom. The album version clocks six minutes, but the single version is four and a half minutes long.[3]
The song also achieved an enormous underground popularity in the Soviet Union[4]. A 15 second clip of the song's performance was shown as a part of the New Year holiday lineup on the state-run TV, leading to the immediate dismissal of the network's director. Russian teenagers mistranslated the refrain of the song to mean:
Moskau, Moskau,
We'll cover you with bombs,
Level you with tanks,
O-ho-ho-ho-ho.
Moskau, Moskau,
On the ruins of Kremlin
We will build concentration camps,
O-ho-ho-ho-ho.
Moskau, Moskau,
Remember year 1941,
It will come to you again.
O-ho-ho-ho-ho.
Moskau, Moskau,
We'll hang your Bear by its feet,
That will become your Olymics.
O-ho-ho-ho-ho.[5].
The actual meaning of the song that was released in an English version by Dschinghis Khan is:
Moscow, queen of the Russian land,
Built like a rock to stand, proud and divine.
Moscow, your golden towers glow,
Even through ice and snow, sparkling they shine.
And every night, night, night, there is music,
Oh, every night, night, night, there is love.
And every night, night, night, there is laughter,
Here's to you brother, hey, brother, ho!
Hey, hey, hey, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, throw your glasses at the wall,
And good fortune to us all, ho-ho-ho-ho-ho, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, join us for a casatchok,
We'll go dancing round the clock, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, drinking Vodka all night long,
Keeps you happy, makes you strong, ho-ho-ho-ho-ho, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, come and have a drink and then,
You will never leave again, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Hey!
Moscow, la-la-la..., ho-ho-ho-ho-ho, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, la-la-la..., ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Moscow! Moscow!
Moscow, Moscow, take Natascha in your arms,
You'll be captured by her charms, ho-ho-ho-ho-ho, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, she will make you understand,
Russia is a wondrous land, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Moscow! Moscow!
And every night, night, night, there is music,
Oh, every night, night, night, there is love.
And every night, night, night, there is laughter,
Here's to you brother, hey, brother, ho!
Hey, hey, hey, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, through your glasses at the wall,
And good fortune to us all, ho-ho-ho-ho-ho, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, join us for a casatchok,
We'll go dancing round the clock, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, drinking Vodka all night long,
Keeps you happy, makes you strong, ho-ho-ho-ho-ho, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, come and have a drink and then,
You will never leave again, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Hey!

The song has also been covered by German black metal band Black Messiah[7] and the Leningrad Cowboys. In China a version with altered lyrics called Fen Dou[8] (奋斗) was made by Da Zhangwei (大张伟).
