A motor ship or motor vessel is a ship propelled by an engine, usually a diesel engine. The name of motor ships are often prefixed with MS, M/S, MV[1] or M/V.[2]
The term steamer is occasionally used, out of nostalgia, for diesel motor-driven vessels, prefixed "MV". Screw-driven steamships generally carry the prefix letters "SS" before their names, meaning 'Steam Ship' (or possibly 'screw-driven steamship'), paddle steamers usually carry the prefix "PS" and steamships powered by steam turbine may be prefixed "TS" (turbine ship).
