The band won the contest, smashing their equipment in the process.[6][7] "It was supposed to be a protest, a statement," Bellamy said, "so, when we actually won, it was a real shock. A massive shock. After that, we started taking ourselves seriously." Shortly after the contest, the three decided to forget university, quit their jobs, change the band name to Muse, and move away from Teignmouth.[8]

First EPs and Showbiz (1998–2000)

After a few years building a fan base, Muse played their first gigs in London and Manchester. The band had a significant meeting with Dennis Smith, the owner of Sawmills Studio, situated in a converted water mill in Cornwall. He had seen the three boys grow up as he knew their parents and had a production company together with their manager to-be Safta Jaffery.[9]
This meeting led to their first proper recordings and the release of the Muse EP on Sawmills' in-house Dangerous label.[6] .Their second EP, the Muscle Museum EP, reached number 3 in the indie singles chart and attracted the attention of British radio broadcaster Steve Lamacq as well as the weekly British music publication NME.^ Muscle Museum EP (EP) ◄ (2 versions) .

Despite the success of their second EP, British record companies were reluctant to sign Muse. It was after a trip to New York's CMJ Festival that an American record label flew them to Los Angeles to showcase. Nanci Walker, then Sr. Director of A&R at Columbia Records, flew Muse to the U. S. to showcase for Columbia Record's then Senior Vice President of A&R, Tim Devine, as well as for American Recording's Rick Rubin. It was during this trip, on 24 December 1998, that Muse signed a deal with Maverick Records.[10] .Upon their return from America, Taste Media arranged deals for Muse with various record labels in Europe and Australia, allowing them to maintain control over their career in individual countries.^ Mushroom Records , Taste Media , Sony Music Entertainment (Indonesia) .

Origin of Symmetry and Hullabaloo (2001–2002)

.During production of the band's second album, Origin of Symmetry, the band experimented with instrumentation such as a church organ, Mellotron, and an expanded drum kit.^ I hope to hear some more instrumental excellence on the primaries (drums + guitars) in the rest of the album but experimenting is good for an album...

.Origin of Symmetry was well-received by critics; NME gave the album 9/10 with Roger Morton writing, "It's amazing for such a young band to load up with a heritage that includes the darker visions of Cobain and Kafka, Mahler and The Tiger Lillies, Cronenberg and Schoenberg, and make a sexy, populist album.^ And, Eurasia has a population of 4.8 billion, and makes up 71% of the entire world population, so if Muse are to be considered the best band in the world by 71% of everyone, then that's fine by me.

.Maverick had reservations about Bellamy's vocal style on this album (considering it not to be "radio-friendly"[citation needed]), and asked Muse to change some of their songs prior to U. .The band also played at the Glastonbury Festival in June 2004. The album's title and themes are the result of the band's fascination with science fiction and political outrage.[21][22] The album charted at No. 1 in the UK, much of Europe, and Australia. It was also a success in the United States, reaching number nine on the Billboard 200 album chart.[23] Prior to the release of the new album, the band resumed making live performances, which had halted while recording, making a number of promotional TV appearances starting on 13 May 2006 at BBC Radio 1's One Big Weekend. .The Black Holes and Revelations Tour started just before the release of their album and initially consisted mostly of festival appearances, most notably a headline slot at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in August 2006.[24] The band's main touring itinerary started with a tour of North America from late July to early August 2006. After the last of the summer festivals, a tour of Europe began, including a large arena tour of the UK.[25] Black Holes and Revelations was nominated for the 2006 Mercury Music Prize, but lost to Arctic Monkeys.^ MUSE : Black.Holes .and.Revelations Und noch eine steigerung zum vorgängeralbum, schrill, melodiös gut wie eh und je!!!!

[33] Muse were present at Rock in Rio Lisboa on 6 June, along other bands such as Kaiser Chiefs, The Offspring and Linkin Park.[34] The band also performed at a new gig in Marlay Park, Dublin on 13 August and were set to play at a gig in Belfast on 14 August. However, the Belfast date was dismissed according to The Belfast Telegraph.[35] Kasabian and Glasvegas supported Muse on their Irish date.[36] A few days later, they were the headline act at V Festival 2008, playing in Chelmsford on Saturday 16 August and Staffordshire on Sunday 17 August.[37] They also hinted at the possibility of a future stadium tour or concerts in South America.[38]
On 25 September 2008, Bellamy, Howard and Wolstenholme all received a Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Plymouth for their contributions to music.[39][40]

The Resistance (2009-present)

Muse performing "Resistance" at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham on 10 November 2009.
The band's fifth studio album The Resistance was released in 2009. It is the first Muse album to have been produced by the band itself.[citation needed] The album was mixed by Mark Stent.[citation needed] On its release, it topped the album charts in 19 countries and reached number 3 on the American album chart.[citation needed] Critics were mostly positive about the album, with much of the praise directed towards its ambition, classical music influences and the thirteen-minute, three-part "Exogenesis: Symphony".[citation needed] It also beat its predecessor Black Holes and Revelations in relative album sales in its debut week in the UK with approximately 148,000 copies sold.[41] The first single "Uprising" was released seven days earlier.[42]
The Resistance Tour started at Hartwall Arena, Finland in October 2009 and will include headlining Coachella Festival in April 2010 and two gigs at Wembley Stadium in September 2010. The band also supported U2 for their U2 360° Tour. In the "Breakfast with Muse Concert" KROQ held, Muse was asked how long they would be on tour. .They commented saying in a paraphrase, "We will probably be touring until the end of next year.^ Then, next, the goddesses sing of Zeus, the father of gods and men, as they begin and end their strain, how much he is the most excellent among the gods and supreme in power.

We will be doing this U2 and European tour and ship off to Australia and Asia and return for an extensive US tour. It will actually be our longest US tour to date. Starting at about the end of February or March."[43]
As of the 15th January 2010, Muse started playing the Big Day Out festival at its various venues in Australia and New Zealand starting with Auckland and eventually ending with Perth. [44]
Muse will be headlining the Glastonbury Festival 2010 along with Stevie Wonder.[45][46] The group will also headline the 2010 Hovefestivalen,[47]as well as T in the Park 2010 and Oxegen alongside Eminem and Kasabian.[48]

Musical style

.Muse's primary genres are progressive rock, glam rock[4], space rock, and alternative rock, but they also integrate parts of electronica, indie, classical[49], hard rock, metal[49] and occasionally R&B[49].^ This is what keeps most people from successfully lowering their levels, because they have a hard time parting with their favorite foods.

Many Muse songs are recognizable by lead vocalist Matthew Bellamy's often falsetto voice and use of vibrato and Auto-tune. As a guitarist, Bellamy often utilizes arpeggio and pitch-shift effects to create a more "electric" sound, citing Jimi Hendrix and Tom Morello as influences for this method.[11]

"I've been listening to quite a lot of music from the south of Italy on this album", Bellamy admits. "I've been living in Italy for a while, and I discovered this music from Naples, which sounds like a mix of music from Africa, Croatia, Turkey, and Italy. It kind of gives it a mystical sound, so I think that's one thing that influenced the album. I like being influenced by things that have a mixed style".[50]
Muse have cited Queen as an influence.[51] Queen guitarist Brian May has praised Muse's work, calling the band "extraordinary musicians" who "let their madness show through, always a good thing in an artist."[52] In particular, Dominic Howard noted the influence of Queen on "United States of Eurasia."[53]
.On the band's association with progressive rock, Dominic Howard has said: "I associate it with 10-minute guitar solos, but I guess we kind of come into the category.^ Real Name: Matthew Bellamy, Christopher Wolstenholme, Dominic Howard Profile: UK Rock band, formed in Teignmouth/Devon in 1994.

A lot of bands are quite ambitious with their music, mixing lots of different styles — and when I see that I think it's great. I've noticed that kind of thing becoming a bit more mainstream." [54]

Muse is an English alternative rock band. They began in Teignmouth in 1994. There are three members of the band: Matthew Bellamy (guitar, piano, vocals), Chris Wolstenholme (bass and background vocals) and Dominic Howard (drums). They are sub-classified as mainly progressive rock, and play music with melody and fast tempo. However, they also play a great number of other styles of music, especially on their older albums like Showbiz. Their albums, Black Holes and Revelations, Absolution and The Resistance, have been successful in the US, UK and most western countries of the world.[2]

History

Creation and early EPs

Matthew Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme, and Dominic Howard grew up in a small town called Teignmouth in Devon. They were bored there, so they started playing music together. When they were 13 years old, they made a band called Gothic Plague. The band was later called Fixed Penalty. After that, it was called Rocket Baby Dolls. In 1994, while they were called Chupalo Rocket Baby Dolls, they won a Battle of the Bands competition. During this competition, they broke their instruments, but still won.[3][4] In 1997, they chose the name Muse.[5] Muse's members did not like Teignmouth. In an interview in 1999, Bellamy said that it was full of people who took drugs, and that it was like a "living hell".[6]

Muse left Teignmouth and met producer Dennis Smith. He liked their work and offered them a contract with his chupalorecord label, Dangerous Records. Muse released their first EP called Muse in 1997. The band went to more band competitions and won several.[4] In 1998, they released their second EP, Muscle Museum.[5] The EP was popular, and Muse toured around Europe and Australia.[4]

Showbiz

Muscle Museum was popular enough to get Muse a record contract with Maverick Records in the United States.[5] The band started to work on a new album. They already had 80 songs written. They wrote new ones, though, for their next album. The other songs they used were already on their EPs.[7] Muse worked with producer John Leckie, who produced Radiohead's album, The Bends.[8]

Muse's first album, Showbiz, came out in 1999. In the United States, Maverick used a large advertising campaign to make Muse more popular.[9] Muse were already popular in the UK, and NME said they were "the first great British guitar band of the 21st century".[10] US magazine Rolling Stone said Showbiz sounded a lot like Radiohead. Matthew Bellamy did not like that comparison, but people would still compare Muse and Radiohead in the future.[11][12] Other reviewers said the band had a lot of potential after listening to Showbiz.[13]

Origin of Symmetry

In the year 2000, Muse traveled a lot to help sell Showbiz. The highlight of the tour was touring with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters.[14] The band played at over 50 music festivals in Europe, and several in Japan. While they were traveling, the band recorded some songs for their next album. In January 2001, they started working on the rest with producer John Leckie, in Peter Gabriel's studio.

Muse began touring again in May 2001, after finishing the album. They had not released it, but Bellamy told BBC he thought the best way to promote it was to play live music. The band's second album, Origin of Symmetry, was released in June 2001 in the UK.[15] However, it was only released in North America in 2005.[16] The album did not do well on charts, but was popular with critics. NME praised the album for the songs on it being very loud and angry.[17] Allmusic said the album was very loud and sometimes ridiculous because of the instruments and riffs used on it, but that it was still very good.[18]

Nescafé used the song "Feeling Good" from Origin of Symmetry (which was a cover of a Nina Simone song) in an advertisement once. Muse sued Nescafé because they did not agree with how the company did business. They received money from Nescafé after suing. They donated it to Oxfam.[19] Muse almost sued Celine Dion when she tried to use the name Muse as the title of a performance in Las Vegas.[20]

Absolution

Muse's third album was recorded in lots of studios in places like London and Los Angeles. The band were very committed to making music. In the recording sessions for their older albums, they had wasted more time.[21] Muse started work in September 2003 with producer Paul Reeve, but they could not make many songs they liked. They took a break for Christmas, and then changed their producer to Rich Costey. Most of the album was recorded in 2004.[22] The album's themes included politics, death, and the Apocalypse.[23][24] The guitar performances on the new album were simpler than on Origin of Symmetry. Bellamy used one brand of guitar for the whole album, and this gave an "immense" sound according to Total Guitar magazine.[22]

To promote Absolution, Muse toured around the UK and North America. During their first show in the United States, in Atlanta, Bellamy hurt his mouth. He had accidentally hit himself with his guitar. Because of this, he needed stitches.[25] The band had to cancel several shows, but kept going with the tour.[26] Muse played at the Glastonbury Festival in June 2004. After the concert, they said it was "the best gig of our lives".[27] Shortly after the show, however, Howard's father died. While they were very sad that he died, Bellamy said they were happy that Howard's father had been at the concert and had seen the band's "finest moment".[27] In 2005, Muse played four songs at Live 8.

Black Holes & Revelations

In January 2005 Muse finished their world tour with two big concerts in London. Bellamy said they wanted to make new music after this. However, they also wanted to tour the US again. This was because they became popular there for the first time. Costey produced the band's new album, like he did for Absolution.[28] The band recorded their fourth album, Black Holes & Revelations, in a château in the countryside of France, because they did not want to be distracted. However, they still recorded the album very slowly.[29]

The Resistance

By February 2 2009, Muse had started recording songs for their new album. In an interview, Bellamy said that the album is "all very orchestral". He said it would sound like classical music.[30]

On March 24 2009, Muse's website said that the band would be going on tour after the album is released. They said that they would go to France on this tour, and have two concerts in London. On July 2 2009, the band said that the tour was to start in Finland on October 22 2009. They also said that the tour would end on December 4 2009, in Italy. The 95,000 tickets went on sale at 9:00 am on June 5. They were sold out within minutes.[31]

On May 22 2009, the website said that the album would be called The Resistance. It also said that one of the songs would be called "United States of Eurasia".[32][33]

On June 16 2009, the band's website said that the album would be released on September 14 2009.

On July 3 2009, the band's Twitter account released the names of the songs on the album.
