In the 1940s, Mydin Mohamed started his business in Penang as a general merchant hawker selling general merchandise. In 1945, he moved to Kota Bharu, Kelantan and opened his first shop in Jalan Tok Hakim, selling toys and also general merchandise. The location was chosen because of the heavy inflow of goods imported from Thailand which makes his business expanded. With the help of his sons, the business spread its operation to Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Lumpur.
Mydin's business began to prosper when Dato' Haji Ameer Ali joined the family business in 1986. He opened his wholesale shop at Jalan Masjid India, Kuala Lumpur. Before joining the business, Dato' Haji Ameer Ali was in the forefront of the banking sector for ten years.
When Mydin Mohamed & Sons Sdn Bhd stores were fully based in Kuala Lumpur, their stores have been acknowledged as their "Headquarters" for all its branches in the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Before their business moved to Kuala Lumpur, the Kota Bharu store was the contribution center mostly for Muslims traders.
When Mydin experienced its rapid growth in size and turnovers, the business was converted from sole-proprietor to a private limited company in July 1991. Mydin Mohamed Holdings Sdn Bhd was led by Mydin Mohamed as its Chairman and all four of his sons were named as the Board of Directors. In February 2000, the company changed its name to MYDIN Mohamed Holdings Berhad.
Mydin stores sell goods that range from Muslims goods, electronic, electrical appliances, watches, toiletries, household, perfumes & non-alcohol perfumes (minyak attar), costume jewelleries, luggage bags, stationeries, shoes, kitchenwares, car accessories, leather-based goods, cosmetics and health products. They also sell textile products such as apparels and garments.
