Popularity

As of January 18th, 2010, Tran has 208 videos available on her YouTube channel and is the most-subscribed of all-time in Australia,[6] the 18th-most subscribed of all-time on YouTube, and the 4th-most subscribed director. She is also the number one most-subscribed for the categories of Director and Partners for Australia, and manages the 52nd-most viewed channel on YouTube of all-time. She was the first runner up in the Miss YouTube contest created by Michael Buckley of What The Buck.[7] Her first video was created on September 25, 2006.[8] Tran vlogs about her daily-life situations as a university student.

Tran is widely-watched internationally, and her popularity continues to soar, with more than 508,000 subscribers[8] and more than 182 million views.[9] This popularity has led to media coverage and appearances in The Sydney Morning Herald,[5] Western Australia Today,[10] B&T Magazine,[11] Venus Zine.[12] Der Spiegel,[13] Báo Viêt Luận Online,[14] Việt Tribune,[15] VnExpress,[16] Triple J,[17] and the Hot30 Countdown.[18] Her defence of Vegemite[19] in response to a YouTube video by Ben Going[20] was featured on the Australian television programme A Current Affair on February 2007, as part of the Vegemite wars segment.

Tran has been recognized for her creative work and popularity on the Internet in various ways. Tran was one of the Australian YouTube celebrities invited to talk about the site at the launch of YouTube Australia in 2007.[21] She is presently enlisted by The Sydney Morning Herald as a contributor and "Real World Correspondent" to their technology vlog Digital Life, [22] complementing main presenter and journalist Séamus Byrne. Although her original skits are specifically written and created for Digital Life, they are produced almost entirely in the same manner and style as her YouTube material. Tran was on the "Creative Catalysts" list for Creative Sydney 2009.[23] She made a three-minute video on what Sydney means to her as part of an event held at the Museum of Contemporary Art.[24][25][26] Tran was nominated for "Best YouTube Channel or Personality" and "Funniest YouTube Channel" by Mashable in their 2009 Open Web Awards.[27] Tran was one of the presenters at the 2010 Entertainment Gathering (EG) convention in Monterey, California.[28]

Videos

Her videos include observational and self-deprecating humour, as well as stream-of-consciousness commentary on social dilemmas, such as how much money to spend on gifts for friends[29] and appropriate telephone etiquette.[30] Other videos include multi-role skits, where (with occasional exceptions) Tran plays most roles, combining multiple takes using split-screen compositing. Examples include dialogue between the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and the Tooth Fairy,[31] and a practical joke by an ultrasound technician.[32] More serious topics have included Tran's responses to the February 2009 Victorian bushfires. Her video response to racist viewer feedback[33] has been described as "astute and scathingly funny."[34]
