Biography

Formation

.After playing keyboards in several heavy metal bands in the 1990s, including for example Nattvindens Gråt and Darkwoods My Betrothed, Tuomas Holopainen decided to create his own project while sitting around a campfire with friends in 1996.[10] He immediately had a clear idea of the music: experimental acoustic music he wrote himself, similar to the music usually played around campfires, but with a distinct sound and atmosphere, played on his keyboards.^ It strayed more away from the more obvious references to melodic power metal, and showed promise of a band that was really starting to find its own sound, a band that would yet become something greater.

.In December 1997, after over a year of existence, Nightwish made their live debut in their hometown Kitee, Finland.^ NIGHTWISH played their first gig in Kitee on the 31st December 1997.

.Following a string of live shows in Finland, the band filmed their first video clip for “The Carpenter” in April 1998. Nightwish completed their touring line up in the summer of 1998 when bassist Sami Vänskä, an old friend of Holopainen, joined the band.^ In April 1998, they started filming the first video, The Carpenter.

.In 2001, Nightwish recorded a cover of Gary Moore’s “Over the Hills and Far Away” together with two new songs (“10th Man Down”, unreleased from Oceanborn, and “Away”, unreleased from Wishmaster) and a remake of “Astral Romance” (from the Angels Fall First album) with Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica) singing Tuomas' part.^ Two new Nightwish tracks are surrounded by a cover tune and a remake of a track from the band's debut album.

 In October 2009, rumors about the new album's name were going around with the title Wind Embraced, but Olzon listed the rumours as "not true"[37] and said that the songs for the new album had not yet been completed apart from 3 songs written before May 2009. Lyrical themes

“The Poet and the Pendulum” is inspired by the Edgar Allan Poe story The Pit and the Pendulum.
In the beginning, Holopainen mainly wrote on mythological and fantasy themes,[42] and often used references to "metaphysics and nature".[43] For example, the song "Elvenpath" is about fantasy in general with references to traditional stories as well as Tolkien. Through the years the lyrics became more personal. On Wishmaster, the title track is still a "tribute to Tolkien and all the other fantasy writers",[44] and "FantasMic" is a direct tribute to Walt Disney and Disney animated films, which Holopainen has said are among his influences. .However, with "Dead Boy's Poem", the album also includes a very emotional piece, which Holopainen calls his "legacy and [...] testament for the whole world.^ Dead Boy's Poem 11.

Language

On their debut album Angels Fall First, songs were written in both the English and Finnish languages, but since then the band has only written songs in English, with the only exceptions being "Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan" from the Once album and the single "Erämaan Viimeinen" (2007), which is a vocal version (with the vocals contributed by Jonsu from Indica) of the instrumental "Last of the Wilds". Holopainen thought that he was very uncertain about the lyrics of that song, because he is of the opinion that writing in Finnish is rather hard, and stated "Finnish [could] quickly sound really cheesy."[49] The 2004 song Creek Mary's Blood also featured a poem read in Lakota, originally written in English and then translated by guest singer John Two-Hawks.

Influence

Nightwish is a symphonic metal band from Finland. They formed in July 1996 playing acoustic mood music. Tuomas Holopainen came up with the idea. He asked Tarja Turunen to sing and Emppu Vuorinen to play guitar.

It was not until the beginning of 1997 that the band started playing heavier music. Jukka Nevalainen joined to play the drums and they switched the acoustic guitar for the electric guitar. In May 1997, Nightwish signed a contract with Spinefarm Records and they released their first album 'Angels Fall First'.

In 1998, Sami Vänskä joined the band to play bass. This same year they released 'Oceanborn', which was much more complicated than 'Angels Fall First'.

In May 2000 they released 'Wishmaster', which was very similar to 'Oceanborn'. They also entered the competition to be Finland's entry for the Eurovision song contest with the song 'Sleepwalker'. They won the phone vote but the judges disagreed so they came second.

Tarja left the group in 2005 after their "End of an Era" tour. In 2007, Swedish singer Anette Olzon was chosen to be the new singer, and they released a single, Amaranth, and a few months later, a new album, Dark Passion Play.
