No 1 Flying Training School (1 FTS) is the oldest military pilot training school in the world.[1][2]

History

1 FTS was formed on 29 July 1919 at Netheravon in Wiltshire, England, using biplanes such as Bristol F.2 Fighters.[1] After operating from number of locations, the school moved to a permanent base at Linton-on-Ouse, North Yorkshire, in autumn 1957,[1] where it was equipped with Vampire T11 and Jet Provost jet powered training aircraft.[2] The school marked its 90th anniversary in July 2009 with a flypast of Tucano aircrafts over York Minster and other events at RAF Linton-on-Ouse.[3]

Current role

1 FTS is still stationed at RAF Linton-on-Ouse with the purpose of training jet pilots and navigators for the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy.[1] The school uses 78 two seat, turboprop, basic trainer Short Tucano T1.[4]
