As of the census of 2000, there were 2,107 people, 928 households, and 596 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,826.3 people per square mile (1,848.9/km²). There were 992 housing units at an average density of 2,272.3/sq mi (870.5/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.44% White, 1.28% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.90% of the population.
There were 928 households out of which 25.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.5% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 32.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.88.
