Location of North Oakland in the City of Oakland.

North Oakland is an area in Oakland, California, bordered by West Oakland, downtown Oakland, Oakland Hills and the adjacent cities of Berkeley, Emeryville and Piedmont. Annexed to Oakland in 1897,[1] it is known as the birthplace of the Black Panther Party and is the childhood home of both Dr. Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale.[2]

Much like neighboring West Oakland, North Oakland has seen major gentrification in the areas south of Children's Hospital. While this recent gentrification has led to the exodus of many African-Americans, as of the 2000 census Blacks still form a majority of the residents of North Oakland, at 57%.[3]

Neighborhoods
