Subject to various definitions, Northern United States may refer to or include all or part of a large geographic area of the United States of America. The United States Census Bureau divides some of the northernmost United States into the Midwest Region and Northeast Region.[1] The Census Bureau also includes states adjacent to the United States northern border with Canada within the West Region.[1]
All or part of the area is sometimes referred to as the "North," sometimes in contrast to the "South." Historically, one definition for the North is that of the states that comprised the non-slaveholding Union states that remained loyal to the United States during the American Civil War.[2]
