From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Office of War Crimes Issues (S/WCI) is an office within the United States Department of State.

It is charged with advising the Secretary of State and formulating U.S. policy relating to war crimes and other atrocities. The office reports to the United States Deputy Secretary of State.

The Department of State states that the office "coordinates U.S. government support for war crimes accountability in the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Cambodia, Iraq, and other regions where crimes have been committed against civilian populations on a massive scale" and "works closely with other governments, international institutions, and non-governmental organizations, and with the courts themselves, to see that international and domestic war crimes tribunals succeed in their efforts to bring those responsible for such crimes to justice." [1]

The current United States Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues is Stephen Rapp.
