Bealach Tithe An Oireachtais (Irish for Houses of the Oireachtas Channel), popularly known as Oireachtas TV, is a proposed digital television channel in the Republic of Ireland dedicated to broadcasting live coverage of the Dáil Éireann, Seanad Éireann, and Committee Hearings. It was established under an enacted Broadcasting Bill 29 of 2008[1] and was planned to be launched in 2009, in time for the launch of Irish digital terrestrial television.[2] The Oireachtas Broadcast Unit conducted an 8 week trial broadcast transmission on the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources DTT Trial(DVB-T trial) from May 7th to July 4th 2008 to test how a full service might work.[3] This test and the DTT trial has now concluded.[4][5][6]

There are reports however that launch of this channel is being deferred for now due to the effects of the credit crunch on the Irish economy and revenues to the Irish Exchequer well down. If this reported decision of the Houses of Oireachtas Commission is endorsed by the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources this broadcaster may be established but not required to begin broadcasting on television platforms in 2010 until the Minister so directs it.[7]

The launching of the afore-mentioned Oireachtas TV would mark a new phase in the broadcasting of political affairs in Ireland, which began with the televising of proceedings of the Houses of the Irish Parliament, the Dáil and the Seanad, in 1990, and the Committee Rooms in 1993. Oireachtas TV already exists online[8] and a summary of which is presented on RTÉ's Oireachtas Report Programme on RTÉ1.[9]

According to the Easy TV commercial DTT multiplex application Oireachtas TV will share space with RTÉ One Deferred.[10]
