The Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary is one of 14 marine sanctuaries in the U.S., found off the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state, U.S.A. The Sanctuary was declared in 1994 and protects about 3,310 square miles (8,570 km2) of the Pacific Ocean between Cape Flattery in the north and the mouth of the Copalis River in the south, a distance of about 135 miles (217 km). The Sanctuary extends into the water from 25 to 40 miles (64 km). Included are three submarine canyons, the Nitinat, Quinault, and Juan de Fuca. 65 miles (105 km) of the Sanctuary's coastline overlap with Olympic National Park. Also included within the Sanctuary are the Flattery Rocks, Quillayute Needles, and Copalis Rock National Wildlife Refuges.
