From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

During World War II, Operation Loyton was an ill-fated 91-man Special Air Service patrol conducted from 12 August to 9 October 1944 in eastern France.

The team had the misfortune to land in the Vosges Mountains at a time when the Germans were preparing to defend the Belfort Gap. As a result, the Germans harried the team. The team also suffered from poor weather that prevented aerial resupply.

Eventually, the commandos broke into smaller groups to return to friendly lines. 31 troopers were captured and executed by the Gestapo.
