Football career

A product of Estudiantes de La Plata's youth ranks, Piatti made the headlines when coach Diego Simeone gave him his first opportunity against Newell's Old Boys on November 18, 2006, as the player was just 17. Piatti scored the winning goal (2‚Äď1) deep into injury time, and became one of the heroes of Estudiantes' championship-winning team.

Piatti made the starting eleven in the 2007 Clausura tournament, with fellow midfielders José Luis Calderón, Juan Sebastián Verón and José Ernesto Sosa. He was also part of the Argentina Under-20 squad that won the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada. The youngest player in the roster, he managed to play several matches.

After making 60 appearances in all competitions for Estudiantes in two years, Piatti was sold to UD Almer√≠a in Spain. Initially an undisputed starter, netting notably in a 1‚Äď1 home tie against Real Madrid,[1] he struggled after the arrival, midway through his first season, of Mexican coach Hugo S√°nchez.
